As the event was at the Council on Foreign Relations, Ishan stood up to speak, and his father said with a wide smile, "You have to stand up. That shouldn't be allowed. That is my son."

"Ishan Tharoor of the Washington Post," the younger Tharoor answered straight-faced. He went on, "Certainly posing a question in my personal capacity. And principally to say hello before you take off to your next function." Ishan is a foreign affairs columnist for the Washington Post.

Ishan asked if, during his diplomatic travels around the Western hemisphere, any authorities had asked India to produce evidence of Pakistan's role in the initial attacks.

Senior Tharoor retorted in good humour, "Well, I'm extremely happy you brought this up, Ishan. I didn't seed it, I assure you. This fellow does this to his father," before dealing with the question in earnest.

"Very simply, nobody doubted, and we were not requested proof. But the media has questioned in a few instances. Let me be very clear: India would not have acted without compelling evidence," he stated.

Speaking to his American audience, the Congress MP brought back to memory Osama bin Laden's discovery in a Pakistani safe house near a military camp.

"There are three reasons that I want to emphasize.". First, we’ve witnessed a 37-year history of repeated terror attacks originating from Pakistan, coupled with persistent denials. Americans haven’t forgotten how Pakistan claimed ignorance about Osama bin Laden’s whereabouts until he was found right next to an army camp in a cantonment city. That’s Pakistan’s modus operandi. The Mumbai attacks? They denied any involvement. So we know how they function — they send out terrorists and deny involvement until caught red-handed," Tharoor described.
